Schiemond, Rotterdam
Schiemond is a neighborhood in Rotterdam's Delfshaven district, built in the 1980s on former port land once occupied by the Wilton-Fijenoord shipyard and the Stokvis trading company. It sits along the Nieuwe Maas, close to Het Park, the Museum Park (Kunsthal and Depot), and historic Delfshaven, with the city center a short bike ride away. The waterfront housing stock — including the Mecanoo-designed residential towers on the Müllerpier — sits apart from the busier parts of the city, and several of the newer developments are known for distinctive architecture. My take: you get better value per euro here than in central Scheepvaartkwartier next door, especially in the newer buildings. It has tram line 8 which can get you to the Rotterdam Central Station within 10-12min. Streets and buildings closer to the waterfront are very quiet and secluded from transportation noise.
